UCLA will get real sick of LaVar Ball next season

Richard Mackson / USA TODAY Sports

If Steve Alford thought it was tough dealing with LaVar Ball when his son Lonzo starred for UCLA, he's in for a rude awakening next season.

Lonzo, who was one of the best players in the country, will be in the NBA, with his younger brother, LiAngelo, joining the Bruins in his place.

The lottery pick isn't the best player in the world, or better than Russell Westbrook, but the one thing nobody can debate is how freakin' good the kid is. LiAngelo has plenty of talent, but he isn't Lonzo, and he isn't worth the hassle of dealing with LaVar.

Lonzo came to UCLA as the No. 1 point guard in the class of 2016 and the No. 4 overall prospect on the ESPN 300. LiAngelo isn't even the No. 4 prospect in UCLA's 2017 recruiting class. In fact, he's the lowest-ranked player in Alford's six-man haul.

Player (position) Rating/100 Position rank Overall rank
Kris Wilkes (SF) 94 4 13
Jaylen Hands (PG) 90 4 26
Cody Riley (PF) 88 7 39
Jalen Hill (C) 86 8 48
Chris Smith (SF) 82 24 N/R
LiAngelo Ball (SF) 79 39 N/R

LiAngelo may turn out to be a fine player, but there's virtually no shot he ends up cashing the checks his father's mouth has written.

"He's 6-foot-6, 240 pounds, and is a scorer," LaVar told ESPN's Jeff Goodman of LiAngelo. "He might average 20 next year, maybe even close to 30 a game. He's been a scorer all his life. He's led Chino Hills in scoring all four years. UCLA is losing all their scorers - Lonzo, TJ (Leaf), and (Isaac) Hamilton. Nobody who's coming in is a better scorer than Gelo."

Average close to 30 a game? That might be the most outrageous thing LaVar has said, and this is a man who claimed he could beat Michael Jordan one-on-one.

The last major conference player to average 30 points per game was Glenn Robinson as a junior at Purdue in 1993-94. In fact, only three players in major conferences averaged 20 points per game last season, and all were the No. 1 scoring options on their teams.

While the Bruins need to replace their top four scorers from last year, it's a safe bet the majority of those shots will fall to returnee Aaron Holiday, or one of the five recruits ranked higher than LiAngelo coming in. Kris Wilkes and Chris Smith will likely see the court at the small forward position ahead of LiAngelo, who will be hard-pressed to average even 10 points per game.

LiAngelo Ball may end up being a strong player for Alford, but the idea of him averaging close to 30 points per game next season is, well, right on par with most of what LaVar has said the past few months.

He's already claimed UCLA didn't win the championship because they started three white guys with slow foot speed. He also roasted his sons' high school coach following Chino Hills' exit from the state playoffs.

Guess what's going to happen when LiAngelo isn't getting 30 points a game, or even enough shots to approach 20 points per game? Yup, LaVar will race to a microphone faster than Usain Bolt runs the 100 meter.

The 48-year-old already said all his sons are going to be "one-and-done" at UCLA, but there's a better chance that means LiAngelo transfers than heads to the NBA draft.
