Watch: Schwarber goes yard to give Cubs late lead vs. Cardinals
Chicago Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber took advantage of a rough outing from St. Louis Cardinals reliever Brett Cecil and hit just his third career home run against a left-hander - a three-run shot to give the Cubs a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh inning.
Cecil's seventh-inning outing started in unlucky fashion, striking out Matt Szczur on five pitches, but allowing him to reach base thanks to the dropped-third-strike rule. Taking first base is a pretty rare play to begin with, and with Yadier Molina behind the dish, it's even less likely. However, thanks to a freak play where Cecil's pitch somehow got wedged on Molina's chest protector, Szczur reached base safely, and Schwarber hit a three-run blast instead of a two-run game-tying shot.
