Bringing Adrian Peterson in for a visit doesn't close the door on another strong backfield option for the New England Patriots in 2017.

The Patriots and veteran running back LeGarrette Blount, who's remained unsigned since becoming a free agent March 9, have mutual interest in a new deal, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Blount is coming off the most productive season of his career, in which he racked up 1,161 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns for a fourth-ranked Patriots offense.

That performance seemed to put him in position to re-sign, but Rapoport adds that a difference in salary expectations is holding up contract talks.

Though another team could swoop in, Blount's price tag should move closer to New England's desired range the longer he remains on the open market.

Blount sat through over a month of free agency last offseason before eventually signing a one-year contract worth just $1 million to re-up with the Patriots.

Peterson left his visit in Foxboro on Monday without a deal.
