Patrick Ewing can't keep son on staff due to Georgetown nepotism clause

Georgetown has been all about keeping it in the family, with a John Thompson coaching the Hoyas for 40 of the last 45 years.

After John Thompson III was fired in March, he was replaced Monday by the best player John Thompson Jr. coached, Patrick Ewing.

Ewing's son, Patrick Ewing Jr., was an assistant coach in the previous regime, but he can no longer be on staff now that his father is head coach.

Georgetown has a nepotism clause that forbids Ewing from hiring his son, the Hall of Famer told 106.7 The Fan on Wednesday morning, according to Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post.

Ironically, Thompson Jr. had a major influence on the athletic department's hiring of his son as head coach in 2004.
