Watch: Piscotty hit 3 times on trip around bases, leaves with head injury

Next time, Stephen Piscotty might want to run the bases in catcher's gear.

The St. Louis Cardinals outfielder took a rather dangerous trip around the bases in the fifth inning of Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs, and it may end up proving costly for the Cardinals. It all started when Piscotty was hit on the right elbow by a Jake Arrieta pitch, giving him a free pass to first base. Arrieta's next pitch was wild, and when Piscotty successfully took second on the play he was nailed on his other elbow by catcher Willson Contreras' throw.

Things only got worse from there, though. Piscotty then raced home from second to score on Kolten Wong's nubber that Javier Baez overran, only to be beaned in the head by Baez's errant throw home. Piscotty was on the ground for several minutes but left the field under his own power; he was replaced in left field by Matt Adams to begin the sixth inning.

The Cardinals announced Piscotty suffered a head contusion on the play at home plate, and will be reevaluated on Wednesday.

Piscotty signed a six-year, $33.5-million contract extension with the Cardinals on Monday.
