Lovren wants Barkley remorse for meaty Merseyside derby tackle

Dejan Lovren believes Ross Barkley should concede that his tackle during Saturday's Merseyside derby was ugly and apologise.

The Everton midfielder's focus seemed to be lacking in the rivals' bout at Liverpool's Anfield home, and in one incidence of the ball losing his spell in the opening stanza Barkley found himself desperately and dangerously lunging at Lovren.

The Croatian was lucky to not only come through the challenge unscathed, but to play the full 90 minutes as the Reds beat their neighbour 3-1. Still, Lovren would appreciate some remorse from the Toffees' youth product - particularly when it was one of three rash tackles performed by him in the match.

"That is the only thing I do not like. If you make a hard challenge than be open about it and say sorry or something like that,'' Lovren told PA Sport.

"Don't talk to the referee and say it was not a foul. I think everyone saw it, especially me, but now it is over."

Barkley's conduct followed the oft-read script of physical Merseyside clashes, although referee Anthony Taylor felt compelled to brandish just four yellow cards in the encounter. Liverpool actually out-fouled Everton 17-10, but it was Lovren who really felt the force of the visitor's unruliness.

"If I show you (my leg) it will be headlines tomorrow," the centre-back said.

There was one worrisome sight in an otherwise comfortable win for the host, however, as Sadio Mane had to be substituted with a injury to his left leg following an awkward tangle with Leighton Baines.

"When I came in I was looking for him immediately and I saw him on the bed," his manager Jurgen Klopp shared. "He'd already had treatment, and it didn't look like he felt really comfortable."

Mane is understood to be unlikely to feature in Wednesday's visit from Bournemouth.
