49ers' Shanahan: Kaepernick's skill set doesn't fit my offense

With two veteran quarterbacks already on the roster, the San Francisco 49ers aren't in the market to sign Colin Kaepernick - but they did consider it.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan evaluated the prospect of keeping Kaepernick before the quarterback opted out of his contract, but didn't find the 29-year-old to be the type of player he was looking for.

"Colin’s had a great career, and he’s done some really good things," Shanahan told Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle. "I think Colin has a certain skill set that you can put a specific offense to it that he can be very successful in.

"When we first looked at it … that wasn't necessarily the direction I wanted to go. The type of offense I wanted to run was somewhat different and that’s why we went that type of direction."

Instead of Kaepernick, the 49ers signed veteran Brian Hoyer, who had previous experience with Shanahan as a member of the Cleveland Browns. While Kaepernick may have superior athletic skills to Hoyer, Shanahan admires the 31-year-old's work ethic and execution.

"All these questions about what I like in a quarterback, Brian is like that," said Shanahan. "He's obsessed with the game. He will learn your offense. He'll be able to execute and run it.

" ... If your quarterback can't execute it and go through it, it doesn't always matter what the O-line or the receivers are doing."

Shanahan runs a complicated system that took Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan over a season to fully figure out, though it was also the top-scoring offense in the NFL last season.
