Report: Chiefs to host Rey Maualuga on free-agent visit

The Kansas City Chiefs are scheduled to meet with free-agent linebacker Rey Maualuga on Thursday, Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star reports, citing a source.

Maualuga, a 2009 second-round pick, hit the open market over the weekend when the Cincinnati Bengals elected to part ways after eight seasons.

Though his playing time had dropped off in 2016, starting just 6-of-14 appearances, the 30-year-old's experience and ability as an early-down run defender could be an important addition for the Chiefs defense.

Already a clear position of need, the inside linebacker spot becomes all the more imperative for Kansas City to address with longtime defensive leader Derrick Johnson recovering from a torn Achilles.

Maualuga racked up 75 tackles, one interception, and three passes defensed in 2015, his last season as a full-time starter in Cincinnati.
