Cowboys give Witten 4-year extension

Tim Heitman / USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys and Jason Witten have signed a four-year extension that will keep the veteran tight end with the team through the 2021 season, the team announced Tuesday.

Witten, who will turn 35 in May, had one year remaining on his deal, so he is now slated to remain with the Cowboys until he's 40.

The deal has a maximum value of $29.6 million, sources told ESPN's Todd Archer, but doesn't add any guaranteed money to the $7.4 million in base salary (with a cap hit of $12.26 million) that Witten's set to earn this year.

The deal is also reportedly set up for future restructuring, allowing the Cowboys to create nearly $4 million in cap space at an undetermined future date.

Already the Cowboys' all-time franchise leader in catches, Witten will soon break team records for yards and most games played.
