Bowles: Jets to hold open competition at starting QB

The New York Jets now have three quarterbacks on their roster and each of them will have a shot to be the starter in 2017.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles made the revelation Tuesday at the league meetings in Arizona.

Despite the team signing veteran Josh McCown to a one-year contract last week, Bowles said it doesn't guarantee he will be the team's starter.

"There's going to be competition," Bowles said, according to Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York.

Bryce Petty finished 2016 as the starting quarterback and Christian Hackenberg rarely dressed for games as a rookie. They'll both be given equal opportunity to win the lead role in 2017, however, Vacchiano reports.

If the team uses its No. 6 draft pick on another passer, he'll likely enter the competition as well, Vacchiano adds.
