Watch: Frank Martin gives great response to kid reporter's question

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

South Carolina head coach Frank Martin had plenty of reason to be happy Friday night, after all his Gamecocks earned their first ever trip to the Elite Eight with a 70-50 win over Baylor.

As that score indicates, South Carolina got the job done primarily on the defensive end, where the Bears could find no answer to the Gamecocks' smothering play.

That defensive style certainly caught the attention of one young reporter in attendance, Max Bonnstetter from Sports Illustrated for Kids. Bonnstetter questioned Martin about South Carolina's commitment to defense and was given a terrific response from the head coach.

Bonnstetter: Your team clearly won the defensive battle tonight, when you coach or teach your team defense, what’s more important, technique or attitude?

Martin: First of all, a lot of respect to you. That’s a heck of a question. I’ve been doing this a long time, and that’s the first time anyone’s ever asked me that, that's a heck of a question. Attitude comes first. We gotta have guys that are gonna believe in our mission, that are going to believe in what we want to do. Once they believe, then we can teach them the technique. It all starts with out mindset and we've got guys that are completely bought into what we do.

This isn't the first time Bonnstetter has caught the attention of a major college coach. Back in November, he and Kentucky's John Calipari engaged in a memorable exchange about the best freshman Cal has had the opportunity to coach.
