Report: Mike Brey, Shaka Smart turned down Georgetown interest

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Notre Dame's Mike Brey and Texas' Shaka Smart both turned down interest from Georgetown regarding the Hoyas' vacant coaching job, a source told CBS Sports' Gary Parrish.

The source, unidentified, said Brey gave at least some thought to the Georgetown position due to his familiarity with the area. The 58-year-old graduated from George Washington, which is just a couple miles away from Georgetown.

Brey has been with the Fighting Irish for 17 seasons, guiding the program to two Elite Eight appearances in the last three years.

Smart has been at Texas for only two seasons, and was said to have no interest in leaving the Longhorns at this juncture.

Georgetown is looking to replace John Thompson III, whom they parted ways with after a 13-year tenure.
