Geno Smith: I'm going to write down everything Eli Manning does

Joining the second New York-based team of his career, Geno Smith is ready to make the most of his backup duties.

Smith signed with the New York Giants on Monday after passing a physical over the weekend. While Smith wasn't pleased to ride the bench behind journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick for the last two seasons, the 26-year-old is more than ready to learn from his new Super Bowl-winning organization.

"I think the opportunity to learn from (quarterbacks) coach (Frank) Cignetti, coach (Ben) McAdoo, and to be alongside Eli (Manning) and learn from him, a two-time Super Bowl champion and, in my opinion, a Hall of Fame quarterback," Smith told the team website when asked why he chose the Giants. "I think it will work out tremendously for me.

"And it's also an opportunity to be on a real good team, a winning team, get healthy - it's just a perfect scenario for me. I couldn't have written it up any better myself."

Smith has come a long way since firing his agents after not being a first-round pick in 2013, learning to be humble and appreciative of his opportunities. He plans to take full advantage of sitting behind Manning, recording everything that makes the veteran who he is.

"I want to carry my notepad around and whatever I see Eli doing, whether it's in the classroom, on the field or off the field, I want to write it down," said Smith. "Because he's a guy you can model yourself after. If you learn from a guy like that, we can all do a lot better."
