Minnesota United blows historic 1st lead, but takes 1st point from Rapids

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Minnesota United took a 2-1 lead over the Colorado Rapids - yes, you read that right - courtesy of a go-ahead goal by Christian Ramirez on Saturday, the first scoring advantage in the franchise's MLS history. Then the club blew it almost immediately.

The Loons held on to secure a 2-2 draw against the Rapids and subsequently earn their first point in Major League Soccer, though two more were on the offer for Adrian Heath's side.

Ramirez, affectionately known as "Superman" to Miguel Ibarra's "Batman," tucked home a headed effort off a Jerome Thiesson cross in the 58th minute, just moments after Kevin Molino equalized from the penalty spot. Ramirez's celebrations were cut short, however, as one minute later, Marlon Hairston restored the draw with a goal of his own.

While things did not go quite as planned for either team, Minnesota will feel more like the winners on the night as the club walked away with a point, which is more than it could say in its previous two outings in MLS.
