McGregor on bout with Mayweather: 'I am boxing'
Conor McGregor doesn't mince words.
At a Madison Square Garden boxing event featuring countryman Michael Conlan on Friday night, the MMA superstar confidently declared he'd win a potential bout with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather.
"Nobody in this boxing game knows what's coming. When I step in there, I'm going to shock the whole ... world. Twenty-eight years of age, confident as a mother, long, rangy, dangerous with every hand. I'm going to stop Floyd and you're all going to eat your words," McGregor declared to a row of boxing reporters, according to Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times.
Asked when a fight with Mayweather would happen, McGregor responded, "You'll hear about it. I am boxing!"
Mayweather officially announced he'll put aside his retirement to fight McGregor and UFC president Dana White recently conceded the bout is likely to take place. So just what type of fight should the public expect?
"I'm ready to box. I've been ready for a long time. The game's going to be in shock when I step in the ring. Trust me on that," he told Pugmire.
McGregor then told Pugmire he does have a very general date in mind for the fight, but it's not the June one that has been floated.
"(September) is what I'm thinking. That's what the word is. That's what we're close to doing," he said.
