Report: Romero to wait for Bisping-GSP winner

Adam Hunger / USA TODAY

Yoel Romero will have to be content with keeping his No. 1 contender's spot warm.

On Monday, Romero appeared on "The MMA Hour" and requested an interim title bout with middleweight legend Anderson Silva. The 39-year-old Cuban had been chasing a shot at undisputed champion Michael Bisping, but with Bisping booked to face Georges St-Pierre at a future date, Romero decided to pursue another big-name opponent.

Silva was then taken off the table when the UFC announced that he would be facing Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 212, leaving Romero without a prospective dance partner again.

With his top two targets occupied and the rest of the middleweight contenders battling each other over the next few months, Romero has apparently decided to go back to waiting for his title shot, according to Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting.

A tweet by Romero written shortly after the Silva-Gastelum fight announcement appeared to confirm Helwani's report:

Romero last fought at UFC 205 in November, defeating former champion Chris Weidman via third-round KO. He is 8-0 since joining the UFC in April 2013.
