Desmond suffers fractured left hand following HBP

The Colorado Rockies' marquee offseason signing will be sidelined indefinitely.

First baseman Ian Desmond suffered a fractured left hand after being hit by a pitch during the fourth inning of Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Reds and will see a hand specialist Monday.

Desmond took a 93-mph pitch from Reds right-hander Rookie Davis off the hand and was immediately removed from the game. He was later spotted wearing a brace.

Losing Desmond for a significant amount of time is a major blow for the Rockies, who inked the two-time All-Star to a five-year, $70-million contract in early December.

With Desmond injured, Mark Reynolds will likely receive a roster spot after agreeing to a minor-league deal during the offseason.
