Belfort aims for retirement bout at UFC 212 in June

Vitor Belfort is ready to call it quits.

Following a first-round TKO loss to Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Night 106 in Fortaleza, Brazil, "The Phenom" confirmed that he has only one fight remaining on his contract and that he was planning to retire this year regardless of Saturday's outcome.

At the evening's post-fight press conference, Belfort suggested that a previously mentioned "Legend League" could keep his fighting career going, but otherwise he is certain that the end is near.

"Yes," Belfort said, according to Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting. "Unless they create this legends' division, then we can continue a little longer. But training for five-round fights is too much for the body. I was in great shape, but he connected some good strikes and it was his night."

Belfort turns 40 in April, and he credited his team with doing their best to prepare him for Gastelum, an opponent who was four years old when Belfort made his professional MMA debut in 1996.

As for how he wants to go out, Belfort targeted UFC 212 on June 3, a card that happens to be taking place in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro. He did not specify an opponent, only requesting that he be matched up with a non-Brazilian.

"I don't have any names off the top of my head," Belfort said. "I just don't want to fight a Brazilian in Brazil. We have to sit down with the UFC and see which opponent would be an interesting fight. I never turned down fights, always fought the toughest ones in the division, but the last fight has to be special for the fans. Let's see if that's possible."
