Report: Giants expected to meet with Geno Smith

Brace Hemmelgarn / USA TODAY Sports

Geno Smith is generating some interest not long after hitting the open market.

The New York Giants are expected to meet with now-former New York Jets quarterback on Saturday, Art Stapleton of The Record reports, citing sources.

As would presumably the case with any team that may reach out to inquire about Smith, the fit with the Giants is for nothing more than the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.

New York could certainly stand to upgrade in that spot, though, and the former second-round pick is a particularly intriguing option.

Smith showed flashes of ability over his first two seasons. He appeared set to continue in the starting spot in 2015, but a training camp altercation sent him to the sidelines with a broken jaw and he was never able to unseat Ryan Fitzpatrick thereafter.

The 26-year-old's experience as a starter, however uninspiring it may be, would give the Giants some much-needed insurance behind veteran signal-caller Eli Manning.

Ryan Nassib, a 2013 fourth-round pick who has served as Manning's backup for the last four years, appears likely to move on as a free agent.
