Here are the fantasy implications of WR Marquise Goodwin singing with the San Francisco 49ers:

A busy day of signing backup caliber players continues for the 49ers front office, as they've now secured the services of Goodwin, a 26-year-old speedster, who had spent the past four seasons with Buffalo, and QB Brian Hoyer.

Goodwin projects to operate as San Francisco's WR3, behind WR Jeremy Kerley and newly-acquired Pierre Garcon. Quinton Patton and Bruce Ellington are the other names to consider, but neither offer anything like Goodwin's upside. Patton, who is currently a free agent, could also bolt at any time. San Francisco's leading wide receiver last season, Torrey Smith, was released on Monday.

Through four seasons with Buffalo, Goodwin amassed 49 catches for 780 yards and six scores through 39 games. Last year was easily his most prominent, as Goodwin went for 29-431-3 in 15 outings. His 42.6 percent catch-rate was uninspiring, but his deep threat profile makes him worth some attention in deep season-long leagues, My Fantasy Leagues, and tournament-style daily fantasy formats.

Goodwin ran a 4.27 in his 40-yard dash at the 2013 NFL combine and displayed that upside twice last year. In Week 2, Goodwin registered 112 yards with a score, while in Week 7, he dropped 93 yards and another touchdown. Aside from those two games, though, he failed to hit 50 yards receiving in any other outing. That inconsistency makes him an afterthought in seasonal leagues, even with this new role.

Expectations and role in San Francisco

Considering the 49ers have now brought in Kyle Shanahan and Hoyer, there is reason to expect a shade of offensive improvement in 2017. Though Shanahan won't be gifted the services of Matt Ryan or Julio Jones like he had in Atlanta, he'll have complete control over San Francisco's system.

Last year, the combination of Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert led the Niners to finish last in total passing yards, 29th in completion percentage, and 23rd in passer rating. It's not a given that Hoyer improves any of those marks, but he has shown glimpses of functionality that could work in Goodwin's favor.

It may be a stretch to see Goodwin turn into a 2017 version of Atlanta's Taylor Gabriel, but a 500-yard, five-score campaign isn't out of the question. With Shanahan and Hoyer at the helm, Goodwin can be considered as a closing round selection in any My Fantasy Leagues. The occasional long-bomb touchdown would make him a worthy contributor to any roster at that price.
