Report: Rams' Trumaine Johnson signs franchise tag

The Los Angeles Rams and cornerback Trumaine Johnson have already managed to avoid any sort of contract holdout looking ahead to training camp.

Johnson has officially signed the franchise tag less than a week after officially receiving the one-year tender from the team, Peter Schrager of FOX Sports reports.

The two sides can still explore a long-term deal until the July 15 deadline, but the second consecutive franchise tag now tentatively puts the former third-round pick in line to play the 2017 season under a salary of $16.7 million.

Johnson first received the tag ahead after the 2015 season, where his seven interceptions led to the Rams choosing to keep him over Janoris Jenkins in free agency.

Though the 27-year-old was unable to build upon that success in 2016, picking off just one pass in 14 starts, Los Angeles will be banking on him bouncing back as part of Wade Phillips' new-look defense.
