Tebow to appear with Mets during spring training

He's officially made it to the major leagues. In spring training that is.

Scottsdale Scorpions outfielder Tim Tebow will play for the club's major-league affiliate in the New York Mets' upcoming home split-squad games on Wednesday (versus Boston) and Friday (Houston), according to general manager Sandy Alderson, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Part of the reason for Tebow getting the call has to do with the World Baseball Classic, as the Mets are set to lose a maximum of 14 players (11 from the major-league squad), leaving the club with very little depth.

In comes the former Heisman trophy winner, and the Mets, Sherman notes, want Tebow to play in the home-and-home games to help increase attendance and interest.

Tebow has been playing for the Mets' minor-league team so far this spring. He made his transition to baseball last year, and - after being signed by the club - appeared in 19 games in the Arizona Fall League. He hit .194 with 20 strikeouts in 64 at-bats.
