The Portland Timbers have scored the first goal of the 2017 MLS season at the expense of expansion outfit Minnesota United, courtesy of a Lawrence Olum goal from a free-kick near the corner flag.

The chance was crafted when newcomer Sebastian Blanco chased down the ball near the corner flag, earning a free-kick in the process. Diego Valeri then swung the cross directly toward the head of Vytas, who managed to flick the ball onto Olum. The defender then scored with a cheeky chip on goalkeeper John Alvbage, sending the supporters at Providence Park into a fervor.
