The New England Patriots are planning to release offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer, who missed the entire 2016 season due to a hip injury, a source told Tom Pelissero of USA TODAY Sports.

Vollmer spent the whole campaign on the physically unable to perform list, meaning he wouldn't be a free agent until 2018.

The 32-year-old has played his eight seasons with the Patriots after being taken in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft, spending time at right and left tackle.

With Nate Solder and Marcus Cannon producing outstanding 2016 seasons, it was unlikely Vollmer would have been able to regain a starting job, especially given his injury history.
