Lacy: 'Packers very vocal about having me back'

Continuing in the trend of free agents not testing free agency, running back Eddie Lacy says the Green Bay Packers have been open about their interest in keeping him in Wisconsin.

"Talking to my agent, the Packers have been very vocal about having me back there," the impending free agent told ESPN's Adam Schefter on a podcast set to air on Tuesday, his colleague Rob Demovsky writes.

Lacy's first four seasons in Green Bay were turbulent. He scored the Rookie of the Year award after rushing for 1,178 yards and 11 touchdowns in his first season and followed that up with another 1,100-yard season. The two years that followed, however, were campaigns marred by injuries and battles with the scale. He rushed for just 758 yards and three scores in his third season and played in just five games last year, compiling 360 yards and no touchdowns.

An ankle injury cut his 2016 season short. Lacy revealed the nature of the injury to Schefter.

"I messed up my deltoid and widened the bone on my ankle, so I had to get two screws, two wires, and a plate to fix it because I messed up my deltoid ligament," he said.

The Packers appeared to have a replacement in house when they converted former wide receiver Ty Montgomery to a rusher. Montgomery instantly became the team's top running back and has said he will play in that role full time going forward.

Green Bay also was presumed to be in the market for a new option at running back through free agency, but it appears a reunion with Lacy is in the works.
