Joel Embiid out indefinitely with swollen knee

The hits keep on coming for the Philadelphia 76ers' talented prospects.

76ers center Joel Embiid is experiencing swelling in his left knee and is out indefinitely, the team announced Monday.

The injury was initially diagnosed as a bone bruise, but the Sixers revealed earlier in February that the 22-year-old had actually suffered a torn meniscus, although the injury is not believed to be serious. Team doctors decided that the low-grade tear did not require surgery.

The runaway favorite for Rookie of the Year has appeared in just one game since Jan. 20. The same injury kept him from participating in All-Star weekend in New Orleans. Before that he sat out one half of all back-to-backs in an effort to ease his recovery from a broken foot that robbed him of the last two seasons.

Embiid's injury leaves the Sixers in a tough spot. A week ago the team was flooded with frontcourt players, but dealing away Nerlens Noel and Ersan Ilyasova, paired with Embiid's diagnosis, puts them at a deficit.
