D.C. United announced Friday the club has signed defender Maxim Tissot, penning the Canada international who last played in MLS with the Montreal Impact and spent 2016 with the Ottawa Fury.

Tissot, 24, was the Impact's third-ever Homegrown Player signing, but now joins Ben Olsen's side ahead of the 2017 MLS season having successfully impressed in a preseason trial after becoming a free agent at the end of 2016.

"Max impressed us this preseason with his technical ability, intelligence and vision," D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper said in a club-issued statement. "He's a young, versatile player with solid MLS experience who adds depth to our defense and we're happy to welcome him to D.C."

In four seasons with the Impact, Tissot has logged 44 appearances, including 22 as a starter. In that time, he has recorded five goals and one assist, helping the Impact to the post-season in 2013 and 2015.
