Major League Soccer has reportedly started negotiations with German outfit Bayer Leverkusen over the signing of Mexico star striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, according to ESPN FC's Jeff Carlisle.

Carlisle reports that the league has targeted a move in the summer window of 2018 after Hernandez's current contract with Leverkusen expires, in an effort to avoid paying a transfer fee.

Carlisle also reports that Hernandez's salary could exceed $9 million per year, making him the highest-paid player in MLS history. Los Angeles FC and the LA Galaxy are reportedly interested in his services.

The 28-year-old has thrived in the Bundesliga, scoring 26 goals in 40 matches, including 12 times in 28 appearances this season.
