Report: Redskins to begin negotiations with impending FAs at combine

Geoff Burke / USA TODAY Sports

While the Washington Redskins have yet to begin contract talks with any of their impending free agents, team officials are planning to meet with representatives for those players at next week's NFL Scouting Combine, multiple sources told Mike Jones of the Washington Post.

Washington has a long list of players who could be hitting the free-agent market, including quarterback Kirk Cousins, receivers DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon, defensive lineman Chris Baker, and tight end Vernon Davis. Running back Chris Thompson, linebacker Will Compton, and offensive tackle Ty Nsekhe are also pending restricted free agents.

Cousins is not expected to hit the market, as he will likely receive the team's franchise tag if a new deal is not reached by March 1, the deadline to apply the tag.

Washington used a similar approach to its pending free agents last offseason, adds Jones. The team will have plenty of cap room to work with, holding the sixth-most cap space in the league with around $64 million to spend, according to spotrac.com.
