Fowler finding fairways with shorter driver

Rickie Fowler has a new club in his bag this week - well, sort of.

Fowler is using the same head on his driver (Cobra King LTD), but the shaft has been shortened to 43.5 inches from 44.5 inches. The three-time tour winner has improved his accuracy off the tee with the change, finding 75 percent of fairways through two rounds at the Honda Classic.

"It feels great," he said after his second-round 66 Friday. "I may be giving up a little bit of distance, but still I was still able to get a few out there yesterday and I'm getting it plenty far out there. I feel like I have a bit more control, the club is out in front of me a lot easier."

Fowler is ranked 131st this season in accuracy off the tee, but this week at PGA National he's tied for eighth, while only giving up seven yards on average.

The world No. 14 has also shortened his irons and fairway woods to provide the same swing weight throughout his set.

Earlier in the year, Jimmy Walker moved to a shorter weapon off the tee, switching from a 44-inch to a 42-inch driver to help his dismal accuracy on tour. The changed has helped him increase his percentage from 48.31 last season to 55.29 this year.
