Sutton United goalkeeping coach and back-up net-minder Wayne Shaw has handed in his resignation after the FA and the U.K. Gambling Commission opened an investigation regarding his touchline antics in an FA Cup match against Arsenal on Monday.

"Wayne Shaw has resigned from his role at Sutton United following the events of last evening and subsequent publicity," the club wrote in a statement on its official website.

"He has said that he 'fully understands the club's position regarding this matter.' We are naturally disappointed that Wayne's time with us should end in this manner, and would like to thank him for his contribution to the club and wish him well for the future."

Shaw, 45, captured media attention in this otherwise one-sided tilt due in part to his stature. Bookies at Sun Bets - the Sun's sports betting website and sponsor of Sutton United - had offered a price of 8-1 on the 280-pound shot-stopper eating a pie "live on air" at any point during the match.

Which Shaw went ahead and actually did in the second half after Sutton made all three of its substitutions.

Shaw was aware of the odds, however, and explained the decision to go ahead with the joke, as quoted by the Independent: "A few of the lads said to me earlier on: 'What is going on with the 8-1 about eating a pie? I said: 'I don't know, I've eaten nothing all day, so I might give it a go later on.'"

"As I say what is that, Sun Bets had us at 8-1 to eat a pie. I thought I would give them a bit of banter and let's do it. All the subs were on and we were 2-0 down."

It's an unfortunate turn of events for the "roly-poly goalie," who has truly become a martyr for our banter.
