Spieth in the hunt at Riviera despite wonky driver

Jordan Spieth finished his second round at the Genesis Open on Saturday morning, posting a 3-under-par 68 after heavy rain forced play Friday to be suspended.

Spieth is back in the hunt, despite not having total confidence in his driver at the tight Riviera Country Club.

"Solid given what we had, and the way I drove the ball," said Spieth after his round concluded. "I hit it short and crooked those two-and-a-half days and was able to shoot 5-under."

Stats Round 2 36-hole total
Birdies 4 7
Pars 13 27
Bogeys 1 2
Fairways hit 6/14 13/28
Driving distance 281 279.3
Greens hit 11/18 22/36
Putts per GIR 1.636 1.773

Spieth has looked unworried at most PGA Tour venues lately and feels very comfortable with the course setup at Riviera.

"I like this place a lot. I think it requires experience. It's so well designed, you got to think, you got to work it both ways."

While the Texan is still trying to figure out his driver, it's the putting surface that he believes will be a major factor on the weekend - thanks to the soft, wet conditions.

"That'll be kind of the thing, you'll see guys hit greens and have some short-range birdie putts, given how soft it is," Spieth said. "But actually converting them will be another challenge so, just stay patient on them."

The 23-year-old won last week's AT&T Pro-Am, and is trying to become the first player since 1953 to win Pebble Beach and the Genesis Open in the same year, when Lloyd Mangrum accomplished it.
