Arsenal legend Wright believes Wenger's leaning towards exit

To the delight of an ever-growing demographic of Arsenal supporters desperate for change, former Gunners goal machine Ian Wright has claimed that Arsene Wenger is set to end his 21-year tenure at the club.

Wright, who was at Arsenal in 1996 when Wenger was appointed as Bruce Rioch's replacement, told BBC Radio 5 Live that he spoke with Le Professeur on Thursday night

"I was with the boss last night and if I'm going to be totally honest I get the impression that that's it," Wright told 5 Live, courtesy of the Evening Standard. "I was with him for a few hours last night and we're talking.

"He didn't say to me, 'I'm leaving at the end of the season,' but … I get the impression looking at him that that's it."

With a contract set to expire in the summer and Arsenal slated to miss out on the Premier League title for the 13th year on the bounce since The Invincibles campaign of 2003-04, Wenger's future has been a hot topic at the club.

Since joining the north London lot in 1996 from Japanese side Nagoya Grampus, Wenger has not only changed Arsenal for the better, but the league as a whole. The three league titles and six FA Cups are to show for his efforts, and so too is the emphasis on a player's diet and training that is now the norm, but was once an anomaly.

With a carte blanche at the Emirates, a stadium he's credited with building, it's unlikely the club would force him out, and it's understood that chief executive Ivan Gazidis has tabled a two-year extension for the 67-year-old gaffer.

From the sounds of it, that won't be necessary.

"He actually mentioned when I was talking to him last night that he's coming to the end. I've never heard him say that."

Wright added: "You just feel that he looks winded, like someone has whopped him in the stomach. He has lost all his wind.

"If someone asked me, 'Is he going to go at the end of the season?' I think he will."
