Pebble Beach's 7th: Short, beautiful, and tough

The par-3 seventh at Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of the most photographed golf holes in the world. It's also the shortest hole on the PGA Tour, but don't let the yardage fool you: It can be the toughest 106-yard shot on the planet.

When the wind blows into the players' faces, like it did Thursday at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, golfers will chip mid-irons into the hole. Tony Finau, one of the Tour's longest hitters, used a 5-iron Wednesday in a practice round, while on a calm day, players will select a wedge.

Sam Snead once used a putter to roll it down the hill into the front bunker, making bogey - just to avoid the wind.

During the 1992 U.S. Open, winner Tom Kite hit a 6-iron in a fierce wind left of the hole, then chipped in for birdie.

The hole relinquished just four birdies Thursday, and had a scoring average of 3.14.
