Josh McCown's time in Cleveland has come to an end.

The Browns released the veteran quarterback after two seasons, the team announced Tuesday.

McCown, who will turn 38 over the summer, hinted at the end of the 2016 season that he'd weigh his options for the future. Despite heading for the free-agent market, the journeyman signal-caller intends to continue his playing career, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports.

Competing for a starting job is likely off the table at this stage in McCown's career. Given the experience and level of production he's maintained when healthy over the past few years, though, it's possible teams would have interest in him in a backup role.

Appearing in five games this season, starting three, McCown completed 54.5 percent of his passes for 1,100 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Cleveland will move forward with Cody Kessler and Robert Griffin III rounding out the position, but it's possible the latter will be released in the coming weeks.

Either way, addressing the quarterback position either in the draft, during free agency, or via trade will remain a top priority for the club.

Also released Tuesday was defensive back Tramon Williams.

The 33-year-old, who landed with Cleveland as a free agent in 2015, started 22 games between cornerback and safety over the past two seasons.

In total, the pair of cost-cutting moves save the Browns approximately $11 million in cap space heading into the second year of a mass organizational rebuild.
