Report: Farmar favorite to land roster spot with Cavaliers

Jordan Farmar has emerged as the front-runner to secure a roster spot with the reigning NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers, and hopefully serve as the added playmaker LeBron James so desperately covets.

The 30-year-old guard was reportedly given assurances that if anyone from the team's Wednesday workout was going to be signed, it would be him, sources told ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

Going in his favor is the fact that he'd be willing to ink a 10-day contract, while Mario Chalmers and Kirk Hinrich would reportedly prefer to have guaranteed deals for the remainder of the 2016-17 campaign. Lance Stephenson, the fourth guard invited to the workout, would also be willing come aboard on a 10-day deal.

That way, the Cavaliers wouldn't need to be committed to someone long term in case a more desirable talent was made available via a buyout.

Chalmers was considered the favorite of the four prior to the workout, as he ran the point for James during his four-year stint in South Beach, winning two championships with the Miami Heat.

Farmar, a two-time champion in his own right as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, is reportedly in a "holding pattern," having returned to L.A. to await Cleveland's decision.

Should he receive a 10-day contract, it would cost the team roughly $200,000 due to the luxury tax, jumping up from the approximately $57,000 in salary alone.

A 10-year NBA pro with five different organizations (Lakers, New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings), Farmar has career averages of 7.7 points on 42.3 percent shooting from the field, 2.9 assists, and 1.9 rebounds in 504 total appearances.
