Toronto FC has added another key figure to its backline, with the club announcing Tuesday the signing of DR Congo defender Chris Mavinga from Rubin Kazan.

Mavinga, 25, is described as a left-sided defender who can operate both as a center-back and a left full-back. He has enjoyed stints at Troyes, Stade Rennes, and Genk, and also played in the youth ranks of Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool.

"Adding a player like Chris brings depth to our backline," Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a club-issued statement. "He is a defender that played in the French national youth system which is recognized around the world as a leader in player development.

"We are very excited to add Chris to Toronto FC. His experience at the youth and senior levels will be a welcomed addition to the club."

Head coach Greg Vanney implemented a 3-5-2 formation to much success last season and, as such, Mavinga is expected to slot in as the left-sided center-back alongside Drew Moor and one of Eriq Zavaleta or Nick Hagglund.

He brings with him pedigree and adds some much-needed depth to Vanney's defensive ranks as Josh Williams returned to Columbus Crew SC in the offseason.
