Sunderland completes Oviedo, Gibson buys from Everton

Sunderland has completed the double swoop of left-back Bryan Oviedo and midfielder Darron Gibson from Everton.

Oviedo has signed an agreement on Wearside until 2020, while Gibson signed terms on an 18-month deal.

While both address a lengthy injury list at the Stadium of Light, Oviedo, 26, offers an immediate replacement for Patrick van Aanholt, who left for Crystal Palace earlier on Monday.

Former Manchester United youngster Gibson, 29, started just two Premier League matches for the Toffees before the move.

Manager David Moyes is familiar with both players from his time in charge at Everton, and is now overseeing nine men for at least the second time at Sunderland.

Joleon Lescott, Jack Rodwell, Steven Pienaar, and Victor Anichebe all played under the Scot on Merseyside, while Paddy McNair, Donald Love, and Adnan Januzaj are worked under him during his ill-fated spell of under 10 months at Manchester United.

Moyes has little to spend after years of panic buying at Sunderland, and the long-term treatment room residencies of Duncan Watmore, Jan Kirchhoff, Lee Cattermole, Jordan Pickford, McNair, and Anichebe have left him short-handed. Javi Manquillo, Jason Denayer, and Pienaar are also battling for match fitness, while Papy Djilobodji is serving a four-match ban for violent conduct.

The 20th-placed Black Cats take on title-chasing Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.
