Minnesota United has finally brought in an established goalkeeper just two short months before the start of its inaugural season, announcing Sunday the acquisition of John Alvbage on a six-month loan from Swedish outfit IFK Goteborg with a option to extend that loan after July 15.

The 34-year-old has played for a number of clubs in his career and has also been capped internationally for Sweden, though his last appearance came in 2009. He has enjoyed two separate stints at Goteborg and Orebro SK.

"We are delighted to get John here in Minnesota," goalkeeper coach Marius Rovde said in a club-issued statement. "He has a wealth of experience around the world. He is a hard worker, he has great character and he is a loyal guy who will fit in well in Minnesota.

"A goalkeeper is like an extra coach on the field and when you get someone with the experience of Alvbage, it's a great moment for the club."

Alvbage is the fourth signing out of Scandinavia for Adrian Heath's expansion side, joining Finland midfielder Rasmus Schuller, Norway defender Vadim Demidov, and fellow Swede Mohammed Saeid.

"I have big expectations, this is a great opportunity for myself and everyone at this club, it’s new for all of us and that’s really exciting," Alvbage said. "There is great team spirit and chemistry already building with this club and I'm delighted to be a part of it. I'm pumped, I am excited about what we can create in Minnesota."

Alvbage will likely be Heath's preferred option, with newly acquired netminder Patrick McLain and SuperDraft selection Alec Ferrell playing backup roles.
