The San Jose Earthquakes announced Friday the signing of forward Marcos Urena to a multi-year contract out of Danish outfit Brondby IF, acquiring the Costa Rica international using Targeted Allocation Money.

Urena, 26, has made 45 international appearances with Costa Rica, notching 10 goals. He has spent the last six months with Brondby and joins a San Jose team looking for offensive options to support Chris Wondolowski up top.

"We don't just look at a player's merits or international appearances," Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli said in a club-issued statement. "We focus more on the player’s skill set to understand whether or not they match what the team needs.

"Marcos is a very attack-minded player that will be a very important element in binding our midfield and attack. He has great technique and can make many key passes while covering a lot of ground. I think he's going to be an exciting player for us."

While he has playing experience in Denmark, Russia, and Costa Rica, Urena's latest season has yielded little by way of actual goals; he failed to score in 16 appearances for Brondby this season.

He'll have a few more expectations to meet at his new club.

San Jose head coach Dominic Kinnear said as much himself, offering that the club "brought him here to score goals and help us win and that’s what we expect of him."

Interestingly enough, Urena was born and raised in San Jose, Costa Rica. He now joins a club playing in San Jose, Calif.
