Report: Martial faces uncertain United future

Jose Mourinho may call an abrupt end to Anthony Martial's Manchester United career as the Frenchman continues to get crowded out by his manager's legion of wingers in Stretford.

Martial, who became the world's most expensive teenager when he joined for £36 million from AS Monaco in 2015, is happy at Old Trafford and seemingly had his route into the lineup eased following Memphis Depay's transfer to Lyon last week.

But Mourinho isn't impressed with the 21-year-old's performances, reports Sky Sports, and could sacrifice him during a summer transfer window when serious adjustments are expected to be made to United's attacking ranks.

From the Portuguese gaffer's sentiments ahead of the weekend's FA Cup fourth-round visit from Championship struggler Wigan Athletic, Martial is going to be given another - and, judging from these reports, perhaps his last - chance to prove his worth.

"He will play Sunday and, if Sunday he plays magnificent, he will play against Hull City (in the league) in the next match," Mourinho told the Guardian's Louise Taylor. "It's simple."

Martial was apparently attracting interest from La Liga title chaser Sevilla at the end of December, according to Sky Sports' Nick Lustig, but's it believed United was reluctant to let the Lyon product leave on temporary terms.

Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Ashley Young are all vying with Martial for a spot on either flank, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic is currently immovable from his position leading the forward line.

Mourinho revealed Luke Shaw will be handed his first start since managing just a half in November's League Cup meeting with West Ham United, while backup goalkeeper Sergio Romero will be trusted with swatting away Wigan's efforts to burst the onion bag.
