Vanderbilt working on extension for Derek Mason
Vanderbilt is working on a contract extension for head coach Derek Mason, and a new deal is expected to be announced soon, a team spokesperson told Adam Sparks of The Tennessean on Thursday.
Mason is fresh off leading Vanderbilt to its first bowl game since 2014, though the Commodores lost the Independence Bowl to NC State and finished the season with a 6-7 record.
Overall, Vanderbilt is 13-24 with Mason at the helm. The Commodores have seen their record steadily improve under Mason, but have yet to post a winning campaign since Mason inherited the nine-win program from James Franklin ahead of the 2014 season.

Vanderbilt's most recent season was widely considered a success after Mason and company upended Georgia, Ole Miss, and Tennessee in SEC play.
It's unknown how many years Mason had remaining on his contract, but Vanderbilt athletic director David Williams said at the end of November that there was more than one year left on the deal.
