Real Salt Lake announced Thursday the club has brought back one of its former players in defender David Horst, who was available as a free agent after spending the last three MLS seasons with the Houston Dynamo.

Horst, who was drafted by Real Salt Lake in 2008, spent three years with the club and made just three appearances before swapping over to the Portland Timbers in 2011. With Portland, Horst established himself as a squad player, making 39 appearances.

He went on to become a starter with the Dynamo, making 89 appearances for Houston. Horst, now 31, returns to his first MLS team at a time when its back four is undergoing plenty of changes.

"David is another veteran player that adds a different dynamic to our group of center-backs," RSL general manager Craig Waibel said in a club-issued statement. "With his addition, we are much more comfortable with our depth now that we have four center-backs that are capable of starting and each pairing offers something different."
