Real Madrid crashes out of Copa del Rey as Celta Vigo advances

A bad month got worse for Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Needing to overturn a 2-1 deficit in the second leg of its tie against Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey, Real Madrid could only scrape together a 2-2 draw and crashed out of the tournament in the quarter-finals by virtue of a 4-3 defeat on aggregate. It's the third year running that Los Blancos have failed to reach the semi-finals.

The scoring was opened by yet another own goal from Danilo. Less than two weeks ago, the Brazilian right-back headed the ball into Real Madrid's net in the second leg of Los Blancos' Copa del Rey tie against Sevilla. This time, the product of America Futebol Clube used his feet while failing to react to an impressive 1-on-1 save by Kiko Casilla.

Real Madrid pulled a goal back through Cristiano Ronaldo, who, in the 62nd minute, smacked a 25-yard free-kick past Celta's wall and past Sergio Alvarez Conde. But the Galician club laid Los Blancos to rest in the 85th minute, as Daniel Wass one-timed a shot past Casilla after three defenders failed to do anything about Jozabed Sanchez Ruiz.

Coincidentally, Wass and Danilo are the only two players in La Liga to have scored two own goals in all competitions.

A 91st-minute goal from Lucas Vazquez was merely a consolation for Real Madrid, who, in the span of 10 days, went from enjoying an unbeaten run of 40 matches, to losing twice in a row, to being eliminated from the Copa del Rey.
