Report: Cardinals waiting for Palmer, Fitzgerald to decide futures

The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly still waiting for Carson Palmer and Larry Fitzgerald to decide whether they'll be back for the 2017 season.

Both are considering retirement, and despite "frequent" talks with Cardinals coaches and top front-office staff, neither has committed to returning, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport added that Fitzgerald could be swayed to follow Palmer into retirement unless he knows who the Cardinals would replace him with.

Both signed contract extensions before the 2016 season, but that isn't believed to be a factor in their decisions.

Fitzgerald spoke openly several times during the season about his uncertainty with regards to his future. He said his desire to play remains, but emphasized he wants to be on a competitive team, which the Cardinals weren't this season.

Palmer, however, has been more tight-lipped about his future.

After an MVP-level campaign in 2015, he severely regressed in 2016, with sources telling Rapoport it was the "most physically trying season" of the quarterback's career.
