Marvin Lewis seeking contract extension with Bengals

One of the league's longest-tenured head coaches is hoping to stay right where he's been for each of the last 14 seasons.

Faced with the relative uncertainty of a contract year, Marvin Lewis is seeking an agreement that can put he and the rest of the Cincinnati Bengals organization at ease.

"We'd like to agree to something at some point," Lewis said Wednesday at the Senior Bowl, according to Jim Owczarski of The Cincinnati Enquirer. "It puts, I think, everybody's mind at ease going forward for their futures. A lot of the people in the building, it makes it easier on them."

Cincinnati became one of the NFL's most consistent teams in the second half of Lewis' lengthy tenure, qualifying for the playoffs in all but one season from 2008-15.

With the club's continued playoff struggles over that stretch, though, not once advancing past the wild-card round, it was somewhat unclear as to whether ownership would remain committed to its head coach long term.

Struggling to a disappointing 6-9-1 mark this past season certainly won't help matters, but a one-year extension signed last April gives Lewis an opportunity to bounce back and secure his future in Cincinnati.

The 58-year-old heads into his 15th season with the Bengals having compiled a 118-103-3 record.
