Cowboys' Garrett declines to name Prescott starter for 2017

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett passed on the opportunity to name Dak Prescott his team's starter for 2017.

"Don't want to get into those discussions," Garrett told reporters, according to Jon Machota of The Dallas Morning News, a day after his team was eliminated from the postseason by the Green Bay Packers on a last-second field goal.

Prescott was splendid all season as a rookie starter and put the Cowboys in position to advance to the NFC title game.

"It follows with what we've seen all year long. It didn't surprise us one bit," Garrett said of Prescott's performance in his postseason debut.

Despite Garrett's choice not to give Prescott a public vote of confidence, it would be truly stunning if the rookie QB were not the starter come September.

It's possible Garrett is simply trying to maintain trade leverage for a potential move involving Tony Romo, who is not expected to return to the Cowboys next season at his lofty salary.

"We certainly want the best for him, whether it's here or somewhere else," Garrett said of Romo.

It's also possible Garrett doesn't want Prescott to get complacent and is merely trying to give his rookie a little extra motivation.
