Report: Jaguars interviewed Chip Kelly before hiring Doug Marrone as HC

Cary Edmondson / USA TODAY Sports

Chip Kelly was fired by the San Francisco 49ers after just one season, and it initially appeared none of the five other teams looking for a new head coach even considered him.

However, Kelly actually did interview for one of the vacancies, meeting with the Jacksonville Jaguars before they ultimately gave their head coaching job to Doug Marrone, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

While it was unlikely Kelly would be given another shot at leading a team in the NFL, the fit in Jacksonville would have made sense.

The Jaguars have a host of offensive talent and are desperately attempting to get quarterback Blake Bortles back on track after a disastrous 2016 season.

Kelly has not proven himself to be the revolutionary offensive mind at the pro level many expected him to be, but his offense's have consistently outperformed their talent.
