Spieth after Thomas' 59: 'I think I celebrated more than he did'

Justin Thomas shot 59 on Thursday at the Sony Open, just the eight time it has happened in an official PGA Tour event, and his buddy Jordan Spieth was there to watch all of them.

Spieth - who shot a 5-under-par 65 - was visibly cheering for Thomas coming down the stretch, when 59 became a very real possibility.

"It's history. It's awesome. It's really cool," said Spieth following the round. "To be able to watch it today from our first hole, he chipped in about a 30-yard shot for eagle, but he deserved it. His two best putts of the day didn't even go in and really got robbed."

Here is Thomas' second putt that Spieth was talking about:

"I think I celebrated more than he did and it's awesome, what an awesome last five rounds he's had," stated Spieth.

The 2015 Masters and U.S. Open champion knew the golf course was capable of producing low scores at the beginning of the day.

"The greens are softer, you can make some putts on them and the fairways are running out."

Last week's winner at Kapalua is 33-under-par in his last five rounds and his friend knew to stay out of the way while Thomas was chasing the magic number.

"It's like sitting on the bench on the same team when a guy is throwing a perfect game. You want to stay in the same rhythm you've been staying in the whole day, certainly never bring it (59) up and I was just rooting for him."
