Guinea-Bissau-born winger Gerso Fernandes has joined Sporting KC on a two-year Designated Player contract with an option to extend to three years, the club announced Wednesday.

The frenetic attacker played more than 150 matches during his six-year stay in Portugal, including the 2016-17 Primeira Liga campaign with Belenenses.

No official number has been attached to the transfer, but Fernandes was under contract with Belenenses until June of 2017.

"Gerso is a player who has been on our radar over the past few years," Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes said.

"Once he became available during this window, acquiring him became a priority for us. He is a dynamic winger that can play on either side of the field and the fact that he played a similar formation to ours in Portugal will only help his transition into our team."

Fernandes started in nine of 14 Primeira Liga appearances for Belenenses in 2016 since joining the side in August and he recorded four assists and one match-winning goal in the process.

He added one assist in three domestic cup matches in the 2016-17 Taca de Portugal.

The 25-year old becomes the fourth Designated Player at Children's Mercy Park joining Roger Espinoza, Diego Rubio, and Graham Zusi.
